Six Nations takes Canada and Ontario to court over Haldimand Tract
A decades-long legal battle is set to begin Monday in Toronto, with the Six Nations of the Grand River taking Canada and Ontario to court. The First Nation alleges that the Crown unlawfully sold portions of its lands and mishandled money held in trust for the community.
Six Nations maintains that the 1784 Haldimand Proclamation, which it recognizes as a treaty, granted the community approximately 384,451 hectares of land along the Grand River in Ontario. Known as the Haldimand Tract, the territory was set aside for Six Nations in recognition of their alliance with the Crown during the American Revolutionary War.
